June 14 is celebrated as 'World Blood Donor Day' to create awareness for voluntary, unpaid blood donation from low risk populations and to encourage younger generations of voluntary blood donors in order to maintain supplies of the safest blood possible and save lives. Donated blood is used in safe blood transfusions for women with pregnancy complications, severely anemic children, accident victims bleeding profusely, patients with blood disorders such as thalassemia, hemophilia and sickle cell disease and several other surgical procedures and cancer patients.
World Blood Donor Day also commemorates the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system.

July 28 is celebrated as 'World Hepatitis Day' to promote awareness about viral hepatitis. This primary focus area is to create awareness about viral hepatitis especially Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, which are the chronic form of hepatitis and are most difficult to treat. Most of the people with chronic Hepatitis B or C are unaware of their infection, putting them at serious risk of developing cirrhosis or liver cancer. It is estimated that India has over 40 million Hepatitis B infected patients, second only to China.
